Jean King gave a talk about realising a 50 year old dream to go to the Himalayas and to see Everest.  She explained that, at the age of 10, she had read a book from her local library.  It was "South Col" by Wilfred Noyce, describing his part in the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953.

Jean described how she had trained for 18 months for the 14 day trek to Kala Pattar (at 18,500 feet, it is 2,000 feet above Base Camp) as well as the trek to Base Camp itself.  She also had a course of hypnotherapy to overcome her fear of heights to get over the 20 rope bridges.  Jean went with two friends she had known for 50 years, since they started secondary school.

She told how the group of 12 trekkers flew from Kathmandhu to Lukhla, the most dangerous airport in the world! In a series of photographs taken along the trail, Jean explained that the majestic views compensated for the difficulties of walking at altitude and of camping at minus 25 degrees.

She introduced us to the team of Sherpas, porters, cooks, a yak herder and yaks who supported the happy band of trekkers and explained how the trekkers kept each other's spirits up when the going got tough.  We were told how the life of one of the party was saved by being airlifted out by helicopter - after he had shown his credit card to prove he could pay the £5,000 bill!  A porter was also lifted out with a chest infection, insured by the trekking company.

Eventually the group arrived at the viewing area they had aimed for and it was here that Jean and three others from the group finally decided to go to the Everest Base Camp when they woke up at 05:30.

She has come away from the experience with many happy memories and the knowledge that she has raised a lot of money for her four chosen charities ...
