The group were proud to hold their third country talk on March 18, 2009 in the Mickleover library.

Mr Ian Thorburn gave a very informative talk on the history of Sierra Leone and why the British Army and United Nations forces were stationed there.

Ian then went on to tell the assembled group of his time in Sierra Leone with the aid of an emotional slideshow of images he had taken and the stories behind a few of them.

Finally, Ian rounded off his talk describing the help he and his friends are giving to some of the local people and school children.

Ian arranged a ‘shoe box appeal back in 2006 and took the items over to the school he has raised money for, some of which helped build a new wing there, named by the local people after Ian’s wife in appreciation of the work they had done for them.  Part of the shipment also included educational books and basic equipment, like pencils.

All in all it was a very enjoyable evening and we all came away having learnt something about Sierra Leone, its people and its culture.

Many thanks to Ian from the MLUG.
